If the Americans hadn't bled us dry in 1940 and 1941 until Lend Lease kicked in and later Pearl Harbour, we could have reconstructed ourselves, but the Americans almost bankrupted the country demanding bullion for war supplies until they joined the war. We had less than �42 million left at that point, and we had been one of the richest european nations. We didn't demand Francee, Poland etc and all the allies pay our debts to liberate them. However, that was then and this is now.
